Up & Coming Events

Dear Students & Parents, Greetings! Below is a huge list of upcoming activities regarding our jazz and concert band members. I will give more specifics as we get close to these events but I thought I would at least give a preview & heads up on what we are about some of our January & February performances. Apologies, this is a very long post.

Wednesday, January 27th Jazz Workshop & Performance – On this date we will have an incredible group of professional jazz musicians working with our jazz bands and giving a concert performance. We will have Jason Palmer performing with Greg Goebel (Piano), Dave Captein (Bass), Paul Mazzio (Trumpet), Dick Titterington (Trumpet), Thomas Barber (Trumpet). This is a great educational opportunity for our jazz students and ensembles to learn and also perform their festival sets prior to the February 7th jazz festival. Tentative schedule will be as follows:

3:30 – Workshops

6:15 – Dinner Break

7:00 – Jazz Performance in the PAC

Saturday, February 6th Jazz Festival – Both Jazz I & Jazz II will be participating in the West Salem HS Jazz Festival. Schedule TBA.

Monday, February 22nd– Solo & Ensemble Recital at SHS from 6:00-8:00pm – All Bowmen Band, Concert Band, and Wind Ensemble members will be performing a solo or an ensemble piece at this recital. This will be a major event as we have approximately 100 performances throughout the course of the evening!

OMEA District Solo & Ensemble – Saturday, February 27^th (morning or early afternoon time TBD) – This is an annual festival offered to HS & MS band student musicians in our area. Students are encouraged to prepare either a solo piece with accompaniment or to participate in a small ensemble (duet, trio, etc.) and perform in front of a small audience and adjudicator. This adjudicator writes comments in regards to the quality of performance and also gives constructive feedback for our students. Anyone who has gone through this process will testify that you grow exponentially as a musician when you prepare and perform a solo piece of music. The performing experience coupled with the constructive feedback of a professional adjudicator is a priceless experience for our young musicians who are looking for a challenge and to push themselves beyond the average day of music class. Students who place at the top of their instrument will go on to perform at the OSAA state solo contest.

Wind Ensemble members are expected to participate in this event. Concert or Bowmen band members interested in auditioning for Wind Ensemble next year should participate in this event.

Small Ensemble – $10 per ensemble (A Duet would pay $5 each, a trio $3.33 each, a quartet $2.50 each, etc.)

Help get people involved in this great activity! Our band program grows exponentially when our musicians participate in solo & ensemble!

Important Scheduling Note: This year’s solo & ensemble festival is on the same date as Swingin’ with Spaghetti. We’ve known about both of these events falling on the same weekend this year and will work around it. It will be a full day of performances and band for our Sherwood band members.

Swingin with Spaghetti Fundraiser – Saturday, February 27^th 6:00 p.m. – SHS Commons – Tickets $10 – It is our fun Swingin’ with Spaghetti Fundraiser. This is a fundraiser that raises money for our entire band program and therefore involves every band member in our SHS band program. Jazz Musicians will be performing and other student musicians will be serving food.

Parents & Band Supporters, we need you to bring friends who enjoy the fun jazz venue, a good meal, and will load up their wallet before they come and empty it before they leave. There is a great silent auction and lots of things to bid on. Please help us network so we can sell more tickets and get more people involved with this event. Thank you!

Remaining Basketball Schedule – Our Basketball Band is performing at the majority of boys & girls home league games this year. This is another great opportunity for students to show off their music skills, add to our school culture, and earn points toward lettering in band. It is fun music and a great environment to perform in! Student need to sign up for at least 6 different games.
