Dear Students, Here is the Jazz I audition info for the 2023-2024 school year.
What is Jazz I Band?
- Jazz I is composed of a select group of advanced students that perform a wide variety of jazz literature. The jazz style and improvisational techniques are explored, developed and refined. The Jazz Ensemble performs at regional festivals and competitions in the winter and spring. In addition to performing standards, the jazz ensemble is always experimenting with newly composed jazz material from internationally known artists.
- Jazz I will meet every morning from 7:30am-8:20am and is a graded class.
- Jazz I auditions are for enthusiastic musicians who are committed to preparing their parts and showing up on time and ready to play every rehearsal and every gig!
Audition Info
- Submit a video recording of your audition to bstai@sherwood.k12.or.us by Friday, June 9.
- Results will be posted on Tuesday, June 13 at 3:20pm. Mr. Stai will contact the counseling office to make sure that the jazz class is added to the student’s schedules.

Jazz Combo – Combo rehearsals won’t start until we are in person.
Jazz Ensemble 2 will begin mid-November with no audition necessary as long as you are enrolled in a band class.
Jazz Band I

Jazz Band II
Students in Jazz Band II will perform a wide variety of jazz literature while developing basic Jazz technique. Non-traditional instruments such as flute, baritone etc… will be admitted to this group. Jazz style and improvisational techniques are explored, developed and refined. In addition to performing standards, Jazz Band II is also experimenting with newly composed jazz material from internationally known artists.
Jazz II Timeline:
- Jazz II Signups will start the 1st week of November
- Jazz II Rehearsals will begin November 30th.
Jazz II begins on Monday, November 29th at 7:30am in the Auditorium. I am excited to say that Nathanael Ankeny, a saxophone player and jazz professor at George Fox University, will be leading the Jazz II program again.
Jazz II will meet 3 times per week, Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday from 7:30-8:20am. We are not holding auditions for this ensemble. Jazz II is open for currently enrolled band students who are interested in learning or developing their skills on a jazz instrument. We are looking for students who have a good attitude, willing to practice, and show up on time three times a week.
Jazz II will perform about 4 times during the school year.
